Brevard released their 2008 schedule today. No surprises except for the 15 hour roadtrip to MA
. Hopefully the Tornados can get off to a great start before hitting the SAC conference games.

Last Saturday Brevard College held their inaugural Spring Football Game at Brevard Memorial Stadium. I have attached the program from the game that has a roster and a 2008 tentative schedule ( a rumored game in Massachusetts makes it tentative).
Game Recap from reader BakerAJ
General Comments: The main issue Brevard has at the moment is depth. Our first stringers are a pretty solid bunch but there’s a big gap between the 1s and the 2s. The offense is a lot more innovative. Lots of guards pulling, WR screens, wishbone mixed in every ten plays or so, lots of short passes. Seems like the overall offensive scheme is short passing to open up the run. Defense is a little shakier. Not a lot of scheming going on and it’s hard to tell if that’s just the fact that we’re playing spring ball or if it’s gonna be a pretty boring defense. The strengths on defense are the line (mostly the defensive ends) and the linebackers (mostly the outside linebackers). I’ve heard a lot of good coaches say that strength up the middle is important on defense. The Tornadoes may have an issue there.
Positions:
QB: Kye Hamilton #4 may be the biggest upgrade this team has experienced. He’s not gonna knock anyone’s socks off but he throws a very accurate ball and has mastered the out and the comeback. We’ll see a lot of that next year. The backup Matthew Gaines #5 didn’t show me much. We need Kye to stay healthy.
RB: John Taylor #25 is the go to guy. With the addition of Kye Hamilton into our offense and some reliable receivers the game has opened up a lot for Taylor. Defenses will no longer be able to stack the line on Brevard and Taylor will get some bigger holes. He’s one of the strongest runners I’ve seen. He had a fumble that was silly in the game. That must be eliminated. Brevard can’t afford to make turnovers. After Taylor, again, there’s a big drop off. Desmond Wilson #2 is a small, speedy guy but he just doesn’t have the ability that Taylor does.
WR: There are a lot of very reliable receivers in this bunch. Converted QB Trey Wilborn #10 is a good slot receiver with some speed. Donald Hudson #7 and Cory Pertz #84 are great possession receivers. These guys have improved a lot. It helps when the ball is actually being thrown your way.
TE: Didn’t notice any standouts here. May have missed something.
OL: Overall this bunch looks improved from last year. There aren’t any standout guys that I noticed but the line looks a lot more comfortable and they are able to do some more complex things.
DL: This is also a much improved portion of our defense. John Hardee #52 has moved from center to DT and has a pretty good motor on the inside. The standout on the DL is definitely Brandon Rawls #97 though. He was lining up at end most of the day but it seems like he can move around to different positions. He’s got a great burst off the line and was in the backfield most of the day. He’s a guy to look out for.
LB: The linebackers seemed more comfortable than they have been. They are definitely led by Eliot Collins #22. He was flying all over the field making some big plays. He’s gonna be a good one next season.
Secondary: Not many standouts here. This has been a weakness of Brevard’s since the beginning and it seems like that will continue. Teams will be able to throw on us, especially long. Not many standouts here. Notable-Tyrone Arrington #24 has moved from RB to CB. He could provide a spark at the position as he is an excellent athlete.
Brevard President Drew Van Horn announced today that interim Athletics Director Kim Pate would be promoted to Athletics Director. Kim was previously serving as interim AD after the departure of Tom Collins. Prior to Tom leaving Kim was Senior Woman Administrator with the Brevard College Athletics Department. More information to come later.
Scott comes to Brevard from UT-Chattanooga where he served as Defensive Assistant Coach working with outside linebackers and the punt return team. Coach Brumett was a three-year starter at ETSU under Coach Hamilton and later played for UNC.
Brevard announced the addition of two more assistant coaches today, James Beverly and Arketa Banks. Coach Beverly will serve as the Offensive Line Coach and brings a wealth of experience from high school, college, arena, and NFL Europe. Coach Banks will lead the Defensive Backs into the 2008 season coming off assistant and head coaching jobs in a couple North Carolina High Schools. Both coaches have a history with Hamilton, Beverly playing at ETSU and Banks at Elon. Coach Hamilton is forming his staff for the upcoming season and it should be interesting. We look forward to see a list of the new recruits!
Today Brevard College announced the hire of Jerry Mynatt as Assistant Head Coach and Wide Receivers Coach. Coach Mynatt’s previous coaching stops include East Tennessee State University, as an assistant to Coach Hamilton, and most recently at Pikeville College.

SAC Conference Play - New Coaching Staff
Brevard loses two assistant coaches to Lenoir-Rhyne. Coaches Roy Tesh and Anthony Scott join former Brevard Assistant Mike Hoston to help lead the Bears into the 2008 season. Read the press release from LR. No replacements have been announced. - Player Moves
TA - Tyrone Arrington has transfered to NC A&T (can anyone confirm?)
Kye Hamilton (not confirmed) - Amassed some pretty good numbers at Elon.
Earlier today we got word that Tom Collins was no longer Brevard’s Athletic Director. Assistant Athletics Director Kim Pate will assume Collins’ duties being named interim AD. No other details are available at the time of this article. Some are speculating Brevard is experiencing growing pains within the Athletic Department since the move to DII and provisional SAC status. Tom was always a very vocal supporter at the games and an all around nice guy. We at Brevardfootball.net wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors!

After 7 fumbles Brevard was still in the game going into the 4th quarter of the game Saturday night in Hickory. Brevard had a hard time stopping LR fullback Chris Durm. Brevard had a good fan turnout at Moretz Stadium, but was quieted late in the fourth quarter after two LR touchdowns within 10 seconds. Lenoir-Rhyne 23, Brevard - 12
Stats
Chowan no doubt has a long 7 1/2 hour drive back home tonight after a 7-25 loss to a great looking Brevard team. Not sure if Brevard looked that good or Chowan looked that bad? The Tornado defense had a great game forcing 6 turnovers! The offense ran the gambit of plays and players. It seemed almost everyone saw playing time and hopefully the Tornados can get some momentum for next weeks road game in Hickory. Good job on your first win of the season!
